Smart Splitter Buyer's GuideUpdated 13 minutes ago

Complete Smart Splitter Pre-Purchase Checklist

To ensure you get the right product configuration and have the best possible experience, please work through this comprehensive checklist before completing your purchase.

Step 1: Identify Your 240V Outlet Type

First, you'll need to identify which type of 240V outlet you have. The Smart Splitter must match your existing outlet configuration.

Common 240V Outlet Types:

NEMA 10-30 (3-prong dryer outlet)

  • Older dryer outlet found in homes built pre-1997
  • 30A circuit, 24A max charging

NEMA 14-30 (4-prong dryer outlet)

  • Newer dryer outlet found in homes built 1997 or later
  • 30A circuit, 24A max charging

NEMA 14-50 (4-prong EV outlet)

  • Most common EV charging outlet
  • 50A circuit, 40A max charging

NEMA 10-50 (3-prong range/oven outlet)

  • Commonly found in kitchens
  • 50A circuit, 40A max charging

NEMA 6-50 (3-prong garage/welder outlet)

  • Often found in garages for welding equipment
  • 50A circuit, 40A max charging

Step 2: Verify Your Circuit Breaker

Your circuit breaker should match your outlet specification for safe operation:

  • 30A outlets (10-30, 14-30) →  30A circuit breaker
  • 50A outlets (14-50, 10-50, 6-50) →  50A circuit breaker

How to check: Look at your electrical panel and find the breaker that controls your 240V outlet. The amperage should be clearly marked on the breaker switch.

⚠️ Important: Mismatched breakers can create safety hazards and prevent proper Smart Splitter operation. It is okay if the breaker is rated for LESS than the outlet, but the breaker should never be rated for more current than the outlet.

Step 3: Confirm Charging Amperage Compatibility

This is critical for safe operation, especially on 30A circuits.

For 30A Circuits (NEMA 10-30, 14-30):

You must be able to set your charging amperage to 24A or less. Amperage adjustment is possible through:

  • Your EV's settings
  • Your EV charger's controls

Common Non-Adjustable Chargers:

Some EVs come with chargers that cannot adjust below 32A, including:

  • Ford mobile chargers
  • VW mobile chargers
  • Chevy / GM / Cadillac mobile chargers

If your charger is not adjustable to 24A or less: You'll need an adjustable Level 2 EV chargers. We carry a few options that meet these requirements:

  • LENZ Level 2 Home EV Charger (manually adjustable via dip switches)
  • Wallbox Pulsar Plus (app-controlled, can be integrated with the NeoCharge app)

For 50A Circuits (NEMA 14-50, 10-50, 6-50):

  • Maximum 40A per outlet for single device
  • For dual EV charging: 20A per vehicle for simultaneous charging

Step 4: Select Your Smart Splitter Configuration

Smart Splitter Only

Choose this if:

  • Your outlet type matches your EV charger plug
  • You're doing dual EV charging with NEMA 14-50

Pro Bundle (Smart Splitter + NEMA Adapter)

Choose this if:

  • Your outlet type differs from your EV charger plug
  • Most common for dryer + EV setups
  • Includes high-quality UL-certified adapter

Tesla Pro Bundle (Smart Splitter + Tesla Adapter)

Choose this if:

  • You have a Tesla Mobile Connector
  • Tesla adapters automatically set correct amperage limits
  • Available for NEMA 10-30, 14-30, and 6-50 outlets

Dual Charge Bundle (Smart Splitter + Industrial Outlet)

Choose this if:

  • You're planning dual EV charging
  • Want maximum safety and performance
  • Includes professional-grade Hubbell outlet

Step 5: Additional Considerations

Outlet Age and Condition

Recommended: Replace outlets older than 10 years or showing signs of wear

  • Older outlets may have weaker clamping force
  • Can lead to overheating and safety issues
  • Strongly recommended: Upgrade to industrial-grade outlets for EV charging

Industrial vs Residential Outlets:

  • Industrial outlets offer 3-5x better electrical contact
  • Superior heat dissipation
  • Built for continuous high-load applications like EV charging
  • Learn more about industrial outlets

Mounting Bracket Compatibility

  • All Smart Splitters include mounting brackets
  • Two bracket types available for different outlet configurations
  • Canada outlets may require special considerations
  • Brackets are recommended but not required for operation

Extension Cords (If Needed)

If your charging location is far from the outlet:

  • Use only UL-certified extension cords with proper gauge wire
  • We offer 25-foot extension cords for all outlet types
  • Proper gauge: 10 AWG for 30A, 6 AWG for 50A

App Connectivity

Download the NeoCharge App to enable:

  • Wi-Fi connectivity and firmware updates
  • Real-time energy monitoring
  • Cost tracking with utility rate integration
  • Smart charging schedules
  • Grid support features (select regions)

Step 6: Installation Planning

Required Tools

  • Phillips screwdriver (for mounting bracket)
  • Basic electrical safety knowledge

Professional Installation

While many customers install Smart Splitters themselves, consider professional installation if:

  • You're uncomfortable working with electrical equipment
  • You need outlet replacement or upgrades
  • You're installing industrial-grade outlets

Electrician Networks:

  • Treehouse (CA, AZ, NV, UT, TX, FL, VA, NJ, PA, Chicago)
  • Qmerit (Nationwide coverage)

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I use the Smart Splitter with any EV?A: Yes! The Smart Splitter is compatible with all electric vehicles. Compatibility depends on your charger's amperage settings, not the vehicle itself.

Q: Do I need Wi-Fi for the Smart Splitter to work? A: No, the Smart Splitter operates independently. However, Wi-Fi enables firmware updates, energy monitoring, and app features.

Q: What if I have a GFCI breaker? A: GFCI breakers can sometimes trip with splitter configurations due to cumulative leakage current. This is more common with certain charger brands like JuiceBox.

Q: Can I take my Smart Splitter when traveling? A: Absolutely! Many customers use their Smart Splitter as a portable solution for accessing 240V outlets while traveling or visiting friends/family.
