Do I need a separate EV charger with the Smart Splitter?Updated 3 hours ago
Short answer: yes. The Smart Splitter is not an EV charger. It turns one 240V outlet into two, so your dryer (or a second EV) and your EV charger can share the same outlet. You plug a plug-in Level 2 EV charger into the Smart Splitter, and that charger connects to your car.
The good news: you may already have one.
Check what came with your car
Many EVs come with a portable (mobile) charger that plugs into a 240V outlet. Some automakers no longer include one, so check what came with your vehicle. If you have one, you can usually use it with the Smart Splitter.
Will my charger work with the Smart Splitter?
Your charger needs to meet two requirements:
- It plugs in. The Smart Splitter has outlets, so your charger needs a plug. Hardwired wall chargers can't connect to it.
- It can charge at the right amperage for your circuit.
- 30A circuits (NEMA 10-30 or 14-30 dryer outlets): you must be able to set charging to 24A or less, either in your car's settings or on the charger. Some mobile chargers can't go below 32A, including many from Ford, VW, and Chevy/GM/Cadillac.
- 50A circuits (NEMA 14-50, 10-50, or 6-50): up to 40A.

What if my charger's plug doesn't match my outlet?
That's common, for example a dryer outlet and a charger with a 14-50 plug. Use a NEMA adapter between the Smart Splitter and your charger, never between the wall and the Smart Splitter:
Wall outlet → Smart Splitter → adapter → EV charger

What if I don't have a charger, or mine can't adjust to 24A?
You'll need an adjustable plug-in Level 2 charger. We carry two options:
