EMS Pairing: Connecting the Energy Monitor to Your EV ChargerUpdated an hour ago
EMS Setup Guide - PDF Version | Energy Monitor Quick Start Guide - PDF Version
Overview:
Pairing the NeoCharge Energy Monitor with a compatible EV charger creates an Energy Management System (EMS). The Energy Monitor watches your whole home's electricity use, and the NeoCharge platform sets the charger's current limit in real time so the panel is never overloaded.
The charger is controlled over OCPP, a network protocol that runs over Wi-Fi or Ethernet. It is a software connection, not a power wire between the two devices.
This guide covers the Autel MaxiCharger. Pairing is done by the installing electrician on the homeowner's phone and takes about 15 minutes after the hardware is installed.
Before You Start:
- The Energy Monitor is installed and powered. The status light shows PURPLE with a BLUE blink (ready for setup). See the Energy Monitor Installation Guide.
- The Autel charger is installed, wired and powered on.
- The charger is added to the Autel Charge app over Bluetooth, joined to the home Wi-Fi, and running the latest firmware. The update takes 5-10 minutes, so start it as soon as the charger is powered.
- The homeowner's phone has the NeoCharge app and the Autel Charge app installed. The NeoCharge account uses the homeowner's phone number.
- You have a photo of the label on the back of the Energy Monitor. It has the 6-digit installer PIN.
IMPORTANT: Two PINs, don't mix them up
- Autel Charger PIN: inside the Autel Quick Start booklet. The Autel app asks for it. Leave the booklet with the homeowner.
- NeoCharge Installer PIN: 6 digits, on the back of the Energy Monitor and on the Installer Guide insert. The NeoCharge app asks for it to pair the EMS, and again for any future EMS changes.
Pairing Steps:
- Connect the Autel Charger to NeoCharge
- In the NeoCharge app: Add Device > Add Your Smart Charger > Autel. Complete the checklist, then copy the three OCPP credentials.
- In the Autel Charge app: open your charger > OCPP Server > Custom. Paste the three credentials, keeping the field labels matched.
- Tap Connect and follow any restart prompt. The connection can take 60-90 seconds.
- Return to NeoCharge, tap Next and finish the charger connection before adding the Energy Monitor.
- Add the Energy Monitor
- In the NeoCharge app: Add Device > Set Up Energy Management.
- Tap your Autel charger, then Start setup. Allow Bluetooth access (on Android, Location must be on as well).
- Connect the monitor to the home Wi-Fi when prompted. Monitors that are already connected may skip this step.
- Enter the 6-digit installer PIN from the back label, or tap Scan label QR code.
- Name the monitor.
- Match the Installed Panel
- Enter the panel rating as printed on the main breaker. 200 A in the app screens is an example, not a default.
- Choose where CT 1 and CT 2 are installed: Main panel or Subpanel.
- Choose Standard CT clamps or Rogowski coils to match the sensors installed.
- Assign CT 3 and CT 4
- One 240V circuit (most installs): both branch CTs on the EV charger's breaker, one per leg. Select your Autel.
- Two different circuits: CT 3 on the charger (240 V, select your Autel), and CT 4 on another load (120 V or 240 V to match).
- Match the CT rating and circuit voltage, then tap Continue.
- Check every CT assignment on the review sheet against the panel. If it's correct, tap Save to Energy Monitor. Otherwise, tap Go back.
- Confirm Pairing
- Follow any remaining prompts. Confirm the correct charger and location on the completion screen, then tap Go to Dashboard.
- Test Charging
- Plug in the vehicle and start a charging session.
- In the NeoCharge app, open Energy Monitor > Live and switch Energy flow to A.
- Compare the Autel row with the charger's own reading. Within ±1 A or 5% means setup is done.
- Charging ramps up gradually over 1-2 minutes after the car is plugged in while the Energy Monitor confirms there is headroom available.
Readings Don't Match?
- About half: a CT 3 / CT 4 circuit is set to 120 V instead of 240 V.
- Zero: the CT is on the wrong breaker or port.
- Negative: the CT is installed backwards.
- Fix the issue, then re-check the Live screen.
Didn't Work?
- App can't find the monitor: Is the status light on? Are Bluetooth and (on Android) Location on? Is the antenna outside the metal panel box? If the light is PURPLE without a blink, press the monitor's button once to reopen Bluetooth.
- Charger won't connect: re-check the three OCPP fields character by character, then wait the full 90 seconds.
- No live data: check that CT plugs are seated, screws are tight and clamps are closed. Flexible Rogowski coils read 0 without their 12 V supply.
Before You Leave:
- EMS settings are now locked behind the installer PIN, so the system can't be reconfigured without a certified electrician.
- Tell the homeowner:
- Charging slows when the house is busy. That's the system working, not a fault.
- Changing the Wi-Fi name or password later means re-adding both devices.
- Charging ramps up over 1-2 minutes after plugging in.
